Shaped by our experience
Our research and development work spans edge computing and computation offloading, resilient cross-organization communication in crisis situations, secure smart home networking, and communication infrastructures for energy systems. These areas share a common challenge: connectivity cannot simply follow physical proximity, local networks, or organizational boundaries. It has to be defined on a logical layer, based on which devices, users, services, and organizations should be connected, while remaining secure, performant, reliable, resilient, and controlled.
Netsody grows out of that perspective and turns it into a focused product for organizations that need secure, manageable remote access and private networking.
From research demonstrator to software product
Netsody started as an academic research project at the University of Hamburg, exploring new approaches for programmable overlay networks to connect widely distributed edge devices with clearly defined access and security mechanisms. The goal was to give application developers and infrastructure teams a communication layer where reachability, identity, authorization, and access control can be defined explicitly instead of being hard-wired into the underlying physical network.
This layer addressed communication barriers such as NAT, firewalls, encryption, access control, changing network paths, and restrictive environments. As a result, application teams could rely on secure and predictable connectivity, while focusing on their domain-specific application challenges instead of dealing with network constraints.
Over the years, Netsody evolved from a research demonstrator into a robust and secure network access product. It has proven itself across a wide range of domains where systems, users, and services need a reliable, easy-to-use, and secure access layer for distributed environments. Demand for our solution turned out to be real beyond the original research context: organizations and companies approached us with concrete requests to integrate Netsody into their own environments, including use cases in civil protection, critical infrastructure, drone systems, aviation, and edge device operations.
To offer these organizations a reliable partnership, we are planning a spin-out around Netsody. The goal is to support the product with dedicated services, clear responsibilities, and a long-term roadmap, giving customers and partners a dependable point of contact and the confidence that Netsody can be developed, supported, and operated as a sustainable solution.
Applied project contexts
Netsody and the research behind it have already been used in various academic and applied project contexts, including:
- RESCUE-MATE, where resilient cross-organization connectivity supports emergency and crisis-response scenarios.
- RESISTANT, where resilient zero-trust approaches are studied for mission-critical avionics environments.
- SANE, where decentralized, secure, and privacy-preserving data sharing between citizens and institutions was explored.
- CoupleIT!, where reliable communication supports digitally coupled energy systems.
